On September 10, 2025, CIIDS held the CIIDS Salon: Russian Diplomatic Tradition and the History and Reality of China-Russia Relations. Professor Feng Yujun from the History Department at Peking University delivered a presentation and had exchanges with participating scholars. The event was moderated by Vice Chairman Feng Wei, with all CIIDS members and experts from partner institutions in attendance.

Feng Yujun provided a systematic overview of Russia’s diplomatic traditions. He noted that over the course of its long history, Russia has developed a distinctive strategic culture in which diplomacy is consistently centered on safeguarding national interests, placing great emphasis on major-power strategic planning while also stressing pragmatism and flexibility. In particular, when navigating complex international situation, it has demonstrated a combination of strategic patience and a strong focus on advancing national interests.

Feng Yujun observed that the current international situation is undergoing profound changes, while China-Russia relations have demonstrated greater stability. He emphasized that China should continue to uphold the principle of “no alliance, no confrontation, and not targeting any third party,” working pragmatically to promote the sound and steady development of bilateral relations on the basis of mutual respect and equality.

In concluding remarks, Vice President Feng Wei noted that Professor Feng Yujun’s presentation not only provided an in-depth analysis of the historical logic underpinning Russia’s diplomatic traditions, but also offered important insights for understanding the realities of China-Russia relations. He emphasized that the lecture would help CIIDS to “better understand Russia” and further broaden the international perspective of our “Understanding China” initiative.
