On May 27, 2025, CIIDS Founding Chairman Zheng Bijian met, at CIIDS, with Mr. John Thornton, Co-chair of the Board of Trustees of the Asia Society, who is currently in Beijing for a visit. The two sides exchanged views on topics of common concern, such as China-US relations and think-tank exchanges and cooperation.

Founding Chairman Zheng Bijian expressed his appreciation to Mr. John Thornton for his contributions over the years to promoting China-US exchanges and cooperation. Zheng stated that the current China-US relations are at a critical crossroads. Equal dialogue, mutual respect, and proper handling of each other's legitimate concerns are in the common interests of both China and the United States. The two sides should strengthen exchanges, enhance understanding, establish a correct perception of each other, avoid misjudgments, and manage differences. CIIDS looks forward to continuing in-depth cooperation with Mr. Thornton to promote a better understanding of China, the United States, and the world among all parties.

Mr. John Thornton said that the China-US relations are currently facing risks and challenges. He is willing to maintain strategic communication with Founding Chairman Zheng Bijian and CIIDS, promote mutual understanding between China and the United States, and advance dialogue and cooperation to bring more benefits to the people of the two countries and the world.
